contemp soc on maids:
I think the main reason why maids are being treated as sub-human is that most Singaporean households that do hire maids see them as being different. They differ in nationality, level of skills and most importantly, level of education. These differences are substantial as we see them as being unable to achieve PR status (even if they want to), unable to work in higher skilled and higher paying jobs due to their family background and learning capabilities. We often label them as stupid when they cannot do their household chores well because (as many replies mentioned) we employ them simply for that purpose, and thus have a certain expectation. We believe that maid agencies are able to do their best in 'quality-checks' on their abilities before maids are being sent to work in homes. Similarly, we see an abundance of cases whereby maids are being abused simply because we see stereotype them as meek and weak women, and in worst cases, see them as products that are being exported for our own 'use'.

I feel that Singapore women are faced with a dilemma when they employ maids. On one hand, they hope that the maid can cope with all the household chores and keep up to her expectations. When relatives praise the maid when they visit the house, the employer will also feel proud because it seems as if she is the one who has 'taught' the maid to be so efficient, when in some cases it is actually not true. Conversely, employers do not want to pale in comparison with the maid where household chores are concerned. Some relatives might comment that maids are employed because the employer cannot cope with the household chores well. On the same note, women who employ maids also fear that their own children become too attached to their maids. I have seen cases where children refuse to be carried by their mothers and prefer to be taken care of by the maid.

Although my family does not employ a maid, my friends around me have always managed to make their maids a part of the family. They are treated just like an additional family member. When maids have to leave to return home, it feels just like sending a relative overseas.

Just some random thoughts. =)
new prod devt just to start a new post (dont even noe if it makes sense) on intellectual property for tags:
As I use the websites for blogger flickr and youtube, I was just wondering who first 'invented' the tag? I feel that it really does make organising more convenient. Information in the form of photos, blog posts and videos can be easily retrieved simply by typing the keyword (provided users don't use funky spelling for ordinary words).
world's most unproductive dae. blah~
